Golf one day, Ski powder the next!

The forecast did call for snow overnight but it still was a big surprise to see a completely white landscape and huge thick snowflakes falling down when I awoke on Saturday morning!

The first three photos below, illustrate what I mean.

Can you believe this? These shots were taken April 22, 100 meters from the house.

Midweek had been very spring like: sunny and warm with day-time highs reaching 22 C (72-3 F) on Thursday!

Then a blizzard that lasted until noon.

A herd of wild Elk likes to emerge from the forest during the night to forage on the sweet grass of the soccer field in front of our place. I suspect they feel somewhat safer from predators too, by staying this close to humans. But we have seen coyotes bolding trotting the same path (as the herd below right) in the mid-day sun!

Here is the larger herd, foraging in front of our neighbour. This group counted over 30 animals, mostly mares but with a few young males mixed in.

The huge males are mostly reclusive this time year and the females will soon be separating as well, to find hidden glens in the nearby forest to give birth.

It is an eternal Springtime ritual.

The osprey are back and we hear but rarely see the loud Pilleated Woodpecker.

Robins are everywhere but the grass is not yet green and the leaves not out.

The ice is mostly gone along the river with pockets still remaining along the shore where the sun has not yet made a concentrated appearance.

Winter has a large impact up here. With a ski season that begins in November and is still on-going, (witness the scenes taken here at right and below from Sunday April 24!) spring seems to take its time in arriving.

Which makes the summer golfing and sight-seeing so special in these parts.

You could easily golf the morning and then drive up to the Columbia Icefields and walk on a glacier!

We will be skiing high in the mountains until May 22 but the valley
is mostly devoid of snow now and the local golf courses will
be opening in 2-3 weeks.

My family and I enjoyed skiing on Sunday but we are looking
forward to doing summer activities. We invite you join us!

Sincerely,
