Powder Skiing at Banff and filming on Mt Everest!

Argentina this September

Special Offer to Subscribers

Last Saturday (April 29) was a great spring day in the Mountains and an especially great day up at 7000 ft, at Sunshine Village. Temperatures hovered around 19 C, with mostly sunny skies.

What was most memorable was the fact that ski racers and ski racing aficionados from all over the country were on hand for some fun head-to-head ski racing, story-swapping and fellowship. It ended up being a reunion of ski racing veterans and World Cup and podium winners such as Ken Read, Todd Brooker, Rob Boyd, Brian Stemmle, Thomas Grandi, Felix Belczyk & Allison Forsyth, to name a few.

In Saturday's racing, Canmore's own, Thomas Grandi took the honours (ranked 5th and 6th in the world in SL and GS) besting National team member Jan Hudec in the final.

The occasion was to commemorate the life of ex-national ski-team, friend, coach, husband and father, Rob Bosinger.

Rob was an inspirational coach for my step-son and his teamates. His sudden passing a year ago of SADS  was as tragic and as it was unexpected. This weekend’s race and activities was a chance for all who know him to celebrate his life and our common love of skiing and mountain living.

By day's end, however, Spring's arrival was once again thwarted by a cold front, beginning with rain and ending by night-fall, snow.

Monday evening at the house in the Valley, 3000 feet below Sunshine Village, it began to snow hard. In the local slang it was “puking”. Big huge globular snowflakes, the kind that fires up the imagination of true powder hounds.

It was with great anticipation that I went to bed, anxious to learn what the accumulation was going to be up at the hill in the morning.

23 CM of fresh snow was the report at 6:30 AM, with a perfect low of -7C. Real winter powder for a May day.

I am in the process of organizing a special ski trip to
Argentina, scheduled for mid-September.

For those who: are strong skiers, intrigued by new and unique cultures and have a sense of adventure; skiing the Argentine Andes is an experience you will never forget nor regret.

If you are at all interested in joining me on this excursion, send me an email to:

Needless to say I joined my wife for a “well-earned” morning off work. The pictures I am sure tell the story. The shots posted in this letter were taken after 10:30, so, as you can see, it already looks skied out. The few hundred of us were not stopping for anything.

In other communiqués, I have mentioned that our mountains have often been used for film locations, often portraying US states like; Alaska, Wyoming, Montana and Colorado. In fact Brokeback Mountain was filmed just east of Canmore, where I live.

Here, at right, is another shoot in progress, this time on the shoulder of Sunshine Village’s Lookout Mountain. The film is to be about a climb on Mt. Everest in the Himalayas!

What I hope to convey to you, is that living and visiting these mountains is a special and unique experience. There is nothing like standing on or amongst the peaks to soothe your soul and re-energize your spirit.

I know that most of you have yet to make the journey here. And for a good number it has been many years since you have last come.

The reasons are many and some of them even valid. But because I believe strongly that any and all who visit are so positively affected that I am making a special offer to help you make the decision to come next winter.
